Tom Chalk is a British filmmaker, photographer, and writer based in Nashville, Tennessee. Working across documentary film, photography, and long-form storytelling, his work explores the forces that shape human experience: identity, belonging, myth, and meaning.

His films are driven by a deep curiosity about human behaviour and the stories people use to understand themselves and the world around them. Drawn to overlooked communities, cultural landscapes, and lives lived beyond the spotlight, he creates cinematic, character-led work that examines the relationship between the individual and the wider narratives that shape society.

At the centre of his practice is an ambitious 15-year creative undertaking spanning film, books, and photography. Structured around three interconnected themes, IdentityMyth, and Meaning, the project forms a long-form exploration of what it means to be human. Each body of work builds on the last, moving from the personal to the collective and ultimately toward the universal questions that define human existence.

His current slate includes Behind the Neon, a major documentary series exploring the emotional economy of Nashville's creative community; Fading Appalachia, an observational documentary trilogy preserving the traditions, stories, and cultural heritage of the Appalachian region; and The Lost Boys of the County Fair, a feature documentary examining masculinity, belonging, and the fragile transition from adolescence into adulthood on the American carnival circuit.

Thomas's work has attracted the support of PBS, which described his filmmaking as being rooted in "people, place, and the stories that endure" and praised his commitment to creating "high-quality content that informs, educates, and inspires." PBS further noted that his work provides a platform for "people who rarely get to speak for themselves onscreen" while building a deeper understanding of the communities it documents.

Based in the American South and working internationally, Thomas collaborates with a network of U.S. and international distributors, broadcasters, commissioners, and production partners to develop and deliver premium documentary projects for global audiences. His approach combines rigorous observation with cinematic storytelling, creating work that is culturally specific, emotionally resonant, and internationally relevant.

Above all, Thomas is interested in the enduring question that sits beneath every project: not simply how people live, but why they live the way they do. Through film, photography, and writing, he is building a body of work dedicated to understanding the stories we tell, the myths we inherit, and the search for meaning that ultimately connects us all.

“Tom's commitment to films rooted in people, place, and the stories that endure aligns perfectly with the PBS mission. We believe Behind the Neon deserves wide recognition…I look forward to working with Tom for years to come."
